Founded on February 1, 1978, the Oshawa Portuguese Club holds the distinction of being the first organization to officially represent Portuguese culture and traditions in the city of Oshawa. It was established by five visionaries—Vitor Silva, Chico Branco, António Bonifácio, Fernando Sousa, and Rafael Roberto—to create a dedicated space for the growing Luso-Canadian population in the Durham Region.
For nearly five decades, the OPC has served as a vital cultural anchor. While many clubs of its era focused on sports, the OPC has distinguished itself through its deep commitment to Portuguese Folklore. The club’s dance group, also established in 1978, remains its most vibrant ambassador. Known for their intricate traditional costumes and spirited performances, the dancers are a perennial highlight of Oshawa’s Fiesta Week, representing the “Portugal Pavilion” with pride and excellence.
Located on Simcoe Street South, the club functions as a true community hub. It is a place where traditions are passed down through social gatherings, traditional dinners, and festive celebrations. By prioritizing the arts, music, and the Portuguese language, the Oshawa Portuguese Club continues to ensure that the rich heritage of the “old country” remains a living, breathing part of life for generations of families in Oshawa.
