Poveiros Community Centre Logo

Founded in October 1986, Casa dos Poveiros Community Centre of Toronto serves as a vital cultural link for the Portuguese diaspora in Canada. We represent the heritage of the Douro Litoral and the municipality of Póvoa de Varzim—a region famously defined by its connection to the sea. Our organization was built by a dedicated group of “Poveiros” and friends who sought to preserve the unique traditions, language, and soulful spirit of their homeland while building a life in Ontario. For nearly 40 years, we have been a proud torchbearer for the legacy of Póvoa de Varzim. While we have transitioned from a fixed physical location to a more mobile community model, our mission remains stronger than ever. Today, Casa dos Poveiros functions as a dynamic cultural network, bringing the community together for major milestone celebrations, traditional dinners, and religious festivities held at various venues across the Greater Toronto Area. As a founding member of the Alliance of Portuguese Clubs and Associations of Ontario (ACAPO), we remain deeply involved in the annual Portugal Week celebrations and the Portugal Day Parade. Our “Poveiro Project” continues to flourish through high-profile events—ranging from our traditional São Martinho dinners to commemorative galas—ensuring that the vibrant identity of our ancestors is not only remembered but passed down to the next generation of Portuguese-Canadians.
