Grupo Folclórico Transmontano Logo
Founded in 1981, the Grupo Folclórico Transmontano de Toronto is the only ensemble in Canada dedicated to representing the province of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro. Hailing from a region known for its rugged mountains and “Terra Fria” (Cold Land), our group is built on a foundation of peace, friendship, and a collective mission to protect and share our deepest cultural traditions. Our performances provide a vivid window into the past, showcasing a diverse range of authentic costumes—from everyday work clothes and marketplace attire to the elaborate dress worn for festivals and pilgrimages. A centerpiece of our cultural display is the preservation of the famous Pauliteiros and Pauliteiritas de Miranda do Douro, the traditional stick dancers who represent one of the most unique folk traditions in the Iberian Peninsula. With over 40 years of history, the group has earned widespread acclaim and numerous distinctions for our artistic excellence, including over two decades of membership in the Metropolitan Folk Arts Council. Our dedication to authenticity has fostered a strong bond with our homeland; we have been honored by the visits of several Portuguese municipal mayors and master traditional dancers from Miranda do Douro, ensuring that our techniques and customs remain true to their origins. While rooted in Toronto, the Grupo Folclórico Transmontano has traveled extensively to share our heritage, performing in major cities such as Ottawa, Quebec City, and Montreal. We also maintain a proud tradition of international exchange, representing Canada in tours across Portugal and participating in cultural initiatives—such as literary launches and historical exhibitions—that promote the unique Mirandese culture to a global audience. Today, we continue to inspire new generations to carry forward the vibrant spirit of Trás-os-Montes.
