Rancho Folclórico da Nazare de Mississauga Logo

Founded in 1959, Rancho Folclórico da Nazaré de Toronto stands as one of Canada’s oldest and most respected Portuguese folklore groups. Born from the hearts of the first generation of Portuguese immigrants, our Rancho was created with a clear purpose: to preserve, protect, and proudly share the rich cultural traditions of their beloved homeland.

Our identity reflects the strength, faith, and resilience of the town of Nazaré, known for its deep fishing legacy, vibrant customs, and coastal heritage. Every performance is a tribute, honouring the fishermen who braved the sea and the families who awaited their safe return on shore. From energetic “viras” and lively “corridinhos” to festive “marchas”, each dance tells a story.

We have kept this folklore alive through original choreography, traditional music, and authentic costumes, including our famous traditional attire known as the “Sete Saias” (seven skirts). This outfit, worn by women, consists of seven layered, colourful plaid or patterned skirts, a blouse, a silk embroidered apron, a headscarf, a hat, and a woolen cape – a tradition that can still be seen today on the streets of Nazaré.

Proudly performing across Ontario, we have participated in the annual Portugal Day celebrations, cultural showcases, religious festivities, community events, and private functions. Among hundreds of performances, winning first place at the National Folklore Competition at the O’Keefe Centre in 1964 (where we received an award from Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson) and our appearance in Nelly Furtado’s 2003 music video “Powerless (Say What You Want)” remain the highlights for our group.

As ambassadors of Nazareno culture, we remain committed to authenticity while continuing to evolve with new generations of dancers and musicians. We invite you to be a part of our story – whether as a spectator or a member – as we dance our way through history.

Follow us on social media to stay up to date with our performances, behind-the-scenes moments, and all things folklore. Interested in having us perform at your event? We would love to hear from you. Reach out to inquire about bookings and availability.

Viva o Folclore! Viva a Nazaré! Since 1959.
