Rancho Folclórico “Os Camponeses” de Toronto Logo

Founded in January 2007 by director and dancer Steven Borges, Rancho Folclórico “Os Camponeses” de Toronto was established with a clear mission: to showcase the rich traditions of the Estremadura region and to connect the younger generation with their Portuguese cultural roots. The group made its official debut on March 29, 2008, under the sponsorship of the Casa das Beiras Cultural Community Centre of Toronto. Our ensemble specializes in the folklore of Alta Estremadura, specifically the municipalities of Pombal and Leiria in central coastal Portugal. Through our dances, songs, and attire, we bring to life the authentic customs of the region’s agricultural past. Our wardrobe is a vivid historical record of rural life, featuring meticulously recreated costumes of the camponeses (peasants), including: • Field Workers: Harvesters (ceifeira), diggers (cavador), and olive pickers (azeitoneira). • Tradespeople: Millers (moleira), weavers (tecedeira), and grape harvesters (vindimadores). • Coastal Life: Fishermen and fishmongers (peixeira). Special Occasions: Sunday best (domingueira), pilgrimage dress (romaria), and the formal attire of brides, grooms, and wealthy landowners. As a proud member of the Alliance of Portuguese Clubs and Associations of Ontario (ACAPO), “Os Camponeses” is a multi-generational group with over 25 active members ranging in age from 13 to late adulthood. This diversity ensures that the knowledge of our ancestors is passed directly from one generation to the next. Over the years, our group has become a well-traveled cultural ambassador. In addition to performing at countless festivals across Ontario, we have represented the Luso-Canadian community on the international stage, including featured performances at the Great Feast of the Holy Spirit in Fall River, Massachusetts, and cultural tours throughout the province of Quebec. Today, we continue to perform with the same passion and dedication to authenticity that inspired our founding.
